Hold Security's Holden on How to Make Your Organization a Lesser Target
Building a Better Defence

After making the U.S. and Europe their primary attack targets for the past few years, cybercriminals now have turned to the Asian region. And they are building new schemes that are increasingly more disruptive and harmful to businesses, says Sydney-based Alex Holden, CISO at Hold Security, LLC.

"I'd see the number of threats doubling or even tripling in the Asian region, growing almost at 30 percent as compared to the U.S. or Europe, and hackers trying to monetize almost anything and everything they can extract which can bring them profits," says Holden in an interview with Information Security Media Group conducted at the recent 2016 RSA Conference Asia Pacific & Japan in Singapore.

He says cybercriminals are also evolving and observing the attack surface for extended periods of time to tap into organizational vulnerabilities. "I see increased ransomware attacks which result in quick monetization for hackers and also mobile botnets for quick profits," he adds.

"If security practitioners need to make their organizations unfeasible targets, it is critical to understand the schemes of attackers and patterns of the attacks," argues Holden.

In this inteview (see audio player below photo), Holden offers insights on:

  • Understanding the complexity of the threat landscape;
  • Growing black market trends;
  • Risk mitigation strategy.

Holden is credited with the discovery of many high-profile breaches, including Adobe Systems, the initial vendor breach that led to the discovery of the JPMorgan Chase breach, and the independent discovery of the Target breach. Considered a leading security expert, he regularly voices his opinions in mainstream media.
