With the advent of ChatGPT, the topic of artificial intelligence is gathering momentum. The question on everyone's mind is, "How can the cybersecurity community leverage AI to predict and detect attacks?" Three experts - Zaid Bin Hamzah, executive education fellow at the National University of Singapore; K.C. Wong, director of product development at FocusDigitech; and Hardeep Arora, director and head of AI engineering at Temus - discuss the various challenges and opportunities of AI.

Foremost, some business sectors such as banking face hurdles in adopting AI. "The biggest issue I see is that banks are regulated entities and hence are limited by the free will they get in use of technology," Arora says. "Privacy is a big concern in banks, so one has to be careful while using AI-powered tools."

Wong points out that privacy concerns in data sharing can be addressed using data anonymization tools. "For data to be good, it needs to come from as many sources as possible and needs to be as varied as possible," he says. "The problem is different parties need to agree to this."

Such data sharing could help create a proactive threat intelligence environment, says Hamzah, adding that "the more we are able to share threat intelligence in advance, the more prepared we will be."

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group, the panelists also discuss:

  • The strategic priorities for a cyber risk environment;
  • The limitations of threat intelligence sharing;
  • How cyber defense teams can do a better job than adversaries at harnessing AI.

Arora leads AI engineering at Temus, which is a joint venture between Temasek and UST Global with a mandate to help digitize the Singapore ecosystem. He is an AI expert with two decades of experience in building AI and data analytics systems across digital, consulting and financial services.

Wong has more than 19 years of extensive leadership-level experience in program management, cybersecurity, Web 3.0 and supply chain operations. His passion for cybersecurity has led him to work with a myriad of organizations, ranging from multinational corporations to small and medium-sized enterprises.

Hamzah is a data and AI practitioner who specializes in AI in law and finance, AI governance and cybersecurity. He is an executive education fellow at the National University of Singapore School of Computing, which offers studies on AI innovation management, intellectual property rights in AI, and commercialization of AI Innovation.
