Skybox Security EVP Fox: Ability to Visualize Environment Key to 'Effective' Security
Organizations Struggling With Visibility

Even as the enterprise's digital environment gets more complex, resulting in an ever-increasing attack surface that needs defending, organizations are struggling to gain visibility of all the pieces within their environment - a prerequisite for looking at security holistically, rather than just a compliance-driven checkbox.

Enterprises have spent millions of dollars on security and compliance and yet are finding that they are not really improving their security posture, says Stewart Fox, executive vice president with Skybox Security. This is because one of the biggest security challenges with medium and large enterprises is their inability to visualize their technology environment.

"They don't tend to look at security in a holistic way. Organizations don't look at the entire environment and tend to think of security in terms of point solutions," he says. "So there is a lot of frustration with enterprises today about the lack of understanding regarding their environment." (Also see: Visualizing the Entire Attack Surface)

Organizations have typically got individual products that may be being operated by separate groups within the organization - The products don't talk to each other; neither do the groups of people that operate these products, he says. So there's not a contextual view of what's going on in the environment. His customers are increasingly asking for help with understanding the environment better, he says; which is where he expects analytics to play a huge role in reimagining security and risk within the enterprise.

Fox believes that Asia is a little bit more of a compliance-driven market, although he finds this is changing rapidly. "More often than not we start with a compliance discussion with large enterprises here," he says. (Also see: How Will GRC Take on Mobility, IoT?)

In this exclusive audio interview with ISMG (player link below image), Fox touches upon some of the trends he has noticed from his interactions with Asian customers, and shares his recommendations on what organizations here can do to get more out of their security investments. He speaks about:

  • The need and relevance of analytics in security;
  • How analytics can be sold to you management;
  • How to effectively thwart attacks using existing investments.

Fox, executive vice president of worldwide sales, brings to Skybox Security more than 20 years of technology sales experience in building and motivating sales teams, driving revenue and building strong relationships with both partners and customers. He has had repeated success in the worldwide development and expansion of both enterprise and government sales through direct and indirect channels. Prior to Skybox Security, Fox led the sales team to two years of explosive growth at IronKey, a leader in authentication, encryption and identity management. He has held executive sales leadership roles at both private and public companies including AirMagnet, Network Associates, Network General, and SCO.
