Security: A Constant State of Infection

Damballa's Stephen Newman on the New Security Strategy
Under assault by advanced threats, organizations must change their approach, says Damballa's Stephen Newman. Detection is out; response is in. How do organizations deal with 'a constant state of infection?'

One of the big challenges for organizations is that for so long they have invested in security solutions, personnel and strategies built around preventing breaches, says Damballa, vice president of product and strategy for Damballa. The problem is: Today's advanced threats are largely undetectable, and so security must shift to readiness and response.

"The attack vector is going to come in many forms and fashions; it's going to get through your preventive controls or around them," Newman says. "These organizations now must start figuring out how they are going to address the gaps they have in their security stack around how to discover these hidden infections that have gotten through."

In an interview recorded at the Gartner Security & Risk Management Summit, Newman discusses:

  • The evolution of advanced threats;
  • The challenge of obtaining qualified security staff;
  • The CISO's expanded role.

Newman brings over 14 years of product management experience to Damballa - designing products and product strategies for leading, innovative technology companies. Prior to joining Damballa, Newman was director of product management for secure computing and McAfee.
