Zero Trust and the Role of Automation

Doctor of Zero Trust Chase Cunningham on Progress of Zero Trust Adoption

While the concept of zero trust has been around for years and has been adopted by the federal government, most small- and medium-sized businesses still don't know how to implement zero trust, said Chase Cunnningham, doctor of zero trust, ISMG global content contributor and CyberEdBoard member.

"Some organizations, especially small and midsize businesses, really are trying to gravitate to how to do zero trust. I'll tell you unequivocally, though: There are plenty of publications that won't cost you a nickel that will help guide you toward zero trust," Cunningham said.

Nowadays, much of the zero trust conversation centers on automation. "I fundamentally don't believe that we have a hiring crisis. I think we have a lack of using the right people with the right tools to solve the problems at scale. And as we see, I think there are probably half the things on the floor this year at RSA around automation. That's how we solve the problem without humans being the hitch."

In a video interview with Information Security Media Group, at RSA Conference 2023, Cunningham discusses:

  • How conversations around zero trust have evolved over the years;
  • Threats related to deepfakes, misinformation and disinformation;
  • Security concerns looming in the 2024 federal election cycle.

Cunningham, aka the Doctor of Zero Trust, serves as the advisory board member of Akeyless. Prior to Akeyless, he was the chief strategy officer at Ericom Software, where he shaped the company's strategic vision, road map and key partnerships. He also served as vice president and principal analyst at Forrester Research, providing strategic guidance on zero trust, artificial intelligence, machine learning and security architecture design for security leaders worldwide.
